SharePoint Image column

Modern Image column type. Two-phase write, item first, image upload in post-save.

The Image column is SharePoint's modern image storage column (distinct from the older "Picture" column type which is a Hyperlink-or-Picture variant). Binds to

Image field and Image markup.

Write shape

The image upload is a post-save operation. The SharePoint item is created first; then the image is uploaded to the column with the new item id in the URL. The save flow handles this via the post-save writer mechanism.

The stored value is a JSON object SharePoint generates server-side:

{
  "Id": 12345,
  "ServerUrl": "/sites/.../FormServerImages/...",
  "ServerRelativeUrl": "/sites/.../FormServerImages/IMG_xxxx.png",
  "FileName": "IMG_xxxx.png"
}

Edge cases

  • Failed post-save upload, The item still exists with no image. Authors handling regulated forms (signed receipts, compliance evidence) should reconcile background-scan for items missing the image.
  • Image dimensions, SP doesn't enforce dimensions; the form does via the field's maxDimensions property.
